On 26 October 2025, the historic Rabindralaya, Allahabad came alive with emotion and literature as the Bengali book “Ami Sadharan Ghorer Bou” (I, the Ordinary Housewife) was officially launched. Written by the late Smt. Sabita Chowdhury and co-edited by Dr. Sumita Chatterjee and Tanmay Nag, the book is published by Prosar Prakashani, Kolkata.
The occasion gathered writers, scholars, and admirers of Bengali literature in a warm, reflective atmosphere. Tanmay Nag, filmmaker, writer, and co-editor, attended the event and shared the emotional journey behind curating the manuscript, while Dr. Sumita Chatterjee, though unable to attend, sent her greetings and message of love.
The collection brings together Sabita Chowdhury’s handwritten poems and prose written between 1947 to 1970, revealing the inner world of a woman balancing domestic life and deep creativity. Influenced by Rabindranath Tagore’s humanism and Mahatma Gandhi’s simplicity, her writing captures everyday moments with lyrical beauty and emotional depth.
In her editorial note, Dr. Sumita Chatterjee calls the work “a revival of a silenced literary voice that speaks across generations.” Tanmay Nag described it as “an act of giving voice to a woman who had so much to say but no platform in her time.”
The event received wide media attention and stood out as a celebration of women’s writing, memory, and cultural legacy. ‘Ami Sadharan Ghorer Bou’ reminds us that great literature often begins quietly in ordinary homes, with extraordinary hearts.
